Chee-whatz + Science!

Camp lunch conversation overheard Sharpe Refectory.

BUBS: What’s your favorite kind of Cheez-it?

WEST BAY BUBS: What?

BUBS: What’s your favorite flavor of Cheez-it?

WEST BAY BUBS: What do you mean?

BUBS: What kind of Cheez-it do you like the most?

WEST BAY BUBS: Wait. Cheez-its come in different flavors?

BIGFOOT: Yes. And if you weren’t so busy with that freshly sliced pineapple and shelled edamame you would know that by now <–not say

As Video Game Camp Diabetes Nurse, Bigfoot have up-close view into WBB lovely lunch. Packed by actual pediatrician! Humbling. Not a contest, but please compare.

BUBS: 50g baguette (25g CHO), Baby Swiss Flavor Cheez-Its (20g CHO), aforementioned broccoli soup (2g CHO), apple (organic, 15g CHO, 100% uneaten), Vitamin Water Zero (0g CHO) =45g CHO.

WBB: pineapple, edamame, organic applesauce, organic milk box (not chocolate!), Annie’s organic spaghetti loops with vegan balls, Chobani pineapple yogurt=87g CHO.

Remember, these boys same age, approx. same size, hair approx. same length, both wear 3/4 length pants, participate same postprandial (in)activity (video game writer camp). AND BOTH BG #87 BEFORE LUNCH! Aha! Perfect conditions for official research study inspired by Rule Breaker conversation with dietician prefer greasy pepperoni log over banana for snack. WBB play for team Banana. Bubs play for team Greasy Pepperoni. One uncontrolled variable: Bubs bolus before eat, WBB bolus after. Ready go.

UPDATE: FOOD WINS! (3h. postprandial: WBB 207; Bubs 270.)

Good news 1st w/seasonally inappropriate recipe in green ink

This card was purchased but ultimately rejected. We decided you can’t acknowledge the existence of the F word to someone young enough to be your child until they are over 30, unless you are some kind of pot-smoking fun uncle

Good news: Bubs suddenly take interest food. Today. Mama, do you think I’m healthy? Or Is a Luna bar actually nutritious at all? Or Who eats better food, me or Jacky? And—not mean brag, but this: today choose chicken vegetable soup over 7,367g carb vegan chocolate chip muffin during post-camp grocery shop. Holla! Then ask Bigfoot make winter time favorite broccoli soup. 80 degrees outside. 9PM. OK.

PERFECT ROASTED BROCCOLI SOUP FOR CHILDREN WHO HATE VEGETABLES<—(what a good mother!)

Roast the bejeebers out of a sheet pan of olive-oil drizzled chopped broccoli and shallots. The vegetables should become brown or even black in spots. Put the roasted mess in a big pot. Cover with water and add Better than Bouillon Un-Chicken, approximately one glob. Simmer the bejeebers out of this and smoothify with an immersion blender. Throw in one ton grated sharp cheddar cheese. It will melt. Add salt to taste. For soup like the Broccoli Cheese soup at Panera, add five tons cheese and grated carrots. I should add nooch. I never remember. This is the original version of this soup. CARBS: practically zero, right? (Link shows 1c broccoli-cheddar soup has btw 2-800g. carbs. Somewhere in that ballpark. Pretty sure this recipe’s soup is more on the 2g end.)

Srsly. It’s hard to find a good card in Target when the getting well isn’t from a broken leg or something.

Bad news: Weeks ago Dream Babysitter sick. Ketones. Not able babysit, think better next day. Not sure source ketones. Fever. Dr. Doughnut admit Dream Babysitter hospital. Dr. Bigfoot think probably have flu or stomach bug, get IV or whatever treatment normal for ketones. Bigfoot/Bubs return home p. FFL, write to Dream Babysitter mom Just checking in to see how he’s doing. Probably in Aruba with his friends by now but I just wanted to make sure! Mom Unfortunately, he’s not doing well at all. Know now: not diabetes problem. Encephalitis. Encephalitis! Change to bigger children’s hospital special pediatric neurology place.

This total bullshit any child/person, but Dream Babysitter Bigfoot’s perfect diabetes angel—kind, polite, handsome, smell like dryer sheet, such good role model Bubs + Jack. So matter-of-fact/responsible diabetes; also star of mystery dinner theater play/tennis team/hockey team. Body forget illness dance card already full? No time encephalitis—already going steady diabetes.

Pancake

Pancakes

Bigfoot buy protein powder Whole Foods. Try choose least assertive flavor. Store brand vanilla seem safe; at home afraid use. Not even open canister. Leave on counter. After few day, move pantry. Close door.

Not a great ad for protein powder

Bigfoot protein powder memory stain with college evangelical Christian boy, skinny, white, big veins on hands/arms stirring water + something in cafeteria–glass after glass of little cafeteria drinking glass. Ask what is drink/tell Bigfoot “Just some protein powder.” Bigfoot look past protein glass/veins—see T-shirt. Caricature Jesus crown of thorn, carry big wood cross, slogan at bottom “Benchpress This!”

Ask Facebook what OK make this creepy powder? Bubs eat it? Smoothie one answer. More intrigue: PANCAKE. Slip into pancake. This night everyone in bed, Bigfoot try make. This pancake so delicious? Or Bigfoot just easy due to starve? (Starve due to improvise dal dinner time—gag on golden raisin.) Pretty sure pancake delicious.

PANCAKE

Whole grain pancake/waffle mix (1 cup?) + tiny blue egg + 4 brown-black bananas + vanilla coconut milk (3/4 cup?) + 2 big scoops creepy powder.

Whiz together blender.

Heat pan. Sizzle glob coconut fat/butter.

Fry pancake as if normal. Better small—banana makes extra sticky. Yet not unflippable.

Eat. Maple syrup.

Bigfoot find delightful. Think banana mask creepy protein taste. Also: not low carb. Baby step better than regular pancake. Maybe Bubs eat, maybe not. Try not get heart set on. Difficult impress this person food, only impress large Nerf gun.

Big week: Tuesday Bubs birthday 9. Friday Pump lesson #1. PREPARE: Bigfoot + Jack visit Target (Nerf). Next REI, buy running belt. Maybe Bubs pump fit? Adjust waistband smallest size, look way too big. Pocket look way too small hold pump. Also buy wrist wallet. Think Bubs carry emergency Skittle pack there.

Seizure-y

What lengths will you go to for an extra one of these?

Bubs’s Lantus dose 9u now. 7u before. Coro Center nurse advise test 2AM one or two times, make sure not go too low in night. Tell Bigfoot not need worry, Bubs “is just a normal, growing boy with diabetes.”

As imagine, Bigfoot not 100% keen on 2AM finger prick. Therefore agree camp out by fire, try make mild homestyle adventure. Bubs in sleeping bag, Bigfoot on sofa. Two new New Yorker magazine arrive while Bigfoot in Bahamas, eager read article with Darwin/altruism/vampire bat regurgitate blood into mouth of starving fellow vampire bat.

Settle in by fire. Bigfoot have magazine open, sheepskin spread over sofa, big duvet all to self. Alarm set 2AM. Bubs in sleeping bag, rosy cheeks, hair damp from shower.

BUBS: I feel like I can’t fall asleep

BFOOT: Maybe you’re too hot

BUBS: Yeah

BFOOT: Let’s skooch you away from the fire

BUBS: OK (sets sleeping bag and pillow up a few feet further away from the fire)

BFOOT: (goes back to reading vampire bat article)

BUBS: Or maybe I can’t fall asleep because I just feel so low

BFOOT: You do? (Hops up to get finger pricker. Bubs handles the pricker and runs the test)

BUBS: 39

BFOOT: Thirty-nine? Really? (Runs into kitchen to get candy corn)

BUBS: I’m sorry

BFOOT: It’s not your fault! Are you eating those?

BUBS: It is my fault. I should have told you sooner

BFOOT: Did you eat all seven?

BUBS: Yeah

BFOOT: Did you feel low and not say something?

BUBS: No

BFOOT: It’s not your fault! Honey, you know it’s not your fault at all

BUBS: My legs feel weird. They feel all…seizure-y

BFOOT: They do? (Starts rubbing his legs)

BUBS: Yeah, it’s like I can control them and make them stay still but it’s really really hard to

Sam Fuld is not Sam Talbot

Now at 99. Bigfoot pause. Think. What different? Switch cow milk for sugarfree coconut milk, unsweet almond milk. Also Girl Scout cookies arrive. Also, swim YMCA minnow no guppy (rigorous.) But what if LANTUS whopper dose the problem—low come back again, again, again? Really need hypoglycemia awareness dog. Ask spouse check again: 137.

Sam Talbot eats sauteed broccoli rabe for a snack

Meanwhile, for happy thing, Sam Talbot cookbook arrive. Bigfoot recommend. Sam Talbot so handsome, so healthy, Type 1 since age 12, professional chef, surfer, book of recipe also have practical advice for how carry syringe in pocket, how organize supplies in home, how bring all need in waterproof box for surf. Still huge hassle but gorgeous book make feel better this topic. Wee bit. Bigfoot family decide make pilgrimage Montauk, find Sam Talbot restaurant. Book feature photo Sam Talbot test blood sugar–same blue meter as Bubs, but Sam Talbot meter all scratched up (sandy lifestyle).

Lemon ricotta pancake. Sam Talbot say eat only one time in year because splurge. Sam Talbot limit carbs under 90/day (20-30/meal.) Bigfoot so far away this goal.

One Samoa cookie: 10g carbs. Seems like should be more.

Wellness Policy Good

Please stop making a bad time for Bigfoot's child. And those other kids with issues matter too.

Today Bigfoot learn entire school district adopt Wellness policy. It forbid cupcake/chips/anything kid would want for birthday celebration, also forbid sell candy/cake/anything kid would want at school for fundraiser. Hooray! It not surprising Dream Nurse help write policy, work get it passed by school committee. This have very little do diabetes. More for allergies and obesity.

Whatever–Bigfoot love Wellness policy. But no celebrate yet: principal at 4th + 5th grade elementary school drag feet on implement policy. Bubs attend this school next year. Bigfoot want principal implement in time for September 2012.

Bigfoot desire gather army of freaks, like Portlandia’s Food Allergy Pride Parade. Term “freak” very affectionate: Type 1 diabetes include. Also include: lactose intolerant, gluten free, celiac disease, wheat stimulate latent autism gene, kosher, vegan, halal, basic chub, obese, etc. Best case scenario, Michelle Obama come help Bigfoot, maybe give heirloom seed for garden, Bigfoot and Michelle Obama on cover Whole Living magazine in modest (probably vintage Liberty of London fabric) tube tops –world not able determine who have better arms.

Below paste email exchange Bigfoot/Principal. It interest to almost no one, but maybe help Bigfoot find other parent with similar concern? Salient factor from Bigfoot point of view: Principal not acknowledge slow implement agreed-upon policy. Really drag feet! Also: call Dreamschool “extreme” (when actually Dreamschool only following rule agreed upon by whole town.)

Subject: Food treats in school

Hi Mrs. Principal,

I’m the parent of a 5th grader (Jack Bigfoot) at Cupcake and a 3rd grader (Bubs) at Dreamschool. Jack loves Cupcake and Bubs is looking forward to starting at your school in the fall.

Bubs has Type 1 diabetes, and we know from two other T1 kids at Cupcake that the school nurse provides great care and we’re so grateful for that. One thing that has me worried is how often food treats are shared as part of the Cupcake school day. As a student at Cupcake, Jack has had so many sweets, and that has been fine for him. (And fun!) Jack has even had sugary treats as part of class assignments–for example, to learn the phases of the moon: nibble varying amounts of frosting off of 12 open-faced Oreos and line them up to illustrate how the moon waxes and wanes. This assignment did, honestly, help him learn the moon’s phases. But for obvious reasons, I prefer the food policy at Dreamschool. (There is no food sharing at all, not among students and not with teachers or at classroom parent/PTO parties.)

Although I was one of the first parents to grumble when Dreamschool stopped allowing birthday cupcakes and holiday parties with food, now that Bubs is unable to take part safely, I really appreciate the policy. I am sure many other parents (of kids with nut allergies/religious beliefs banning certain foods/obese kids on special diets) prefer their kids not eat food from unknown sources as well. I am hoping that since Cupcakes is, like Dreamschool, an elementary school, a policy more like Dreamschool’s might be adopted. Is there a chance Cupcakes will consider this change?

Thank you so much for your attention.

Yes! Sure, I’d love to meet. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

After writing to you, I learned that I didn’t have the whole story. Dream Nurse told me about the Dreamschool-style policy that is in place for the whole district, and the next step is for concerned parents/facutly/staff/kids to advocate for its implementation.

Should I call your office to schedule an appointment? Would having other concerned and interested parents attend be worthwhile?

Bigfoot

And this…

Mrs. Bigfoot,

Yes—please call the office. My schedule is so variable. You might want to read the policy. I think it has been posted on the Barrington web site. Dreamschool is more extreme than the actual policy.

I do prefer to meet with each parent separately. Thanks and see you soon.

Principal

And this came from Dream Nurse:

I am the nurse representative in the district for Wellness Committee and have worked on the writing and passing of the new Wellness Policy that addresses this. This policy was recently revised and approved by the school board just this past fall which covers the concerns you have. There is a policy in place, so discussing the implementation of this in the schools is the next step. All administrators are aware of the policy. Maybe the best way to approach this is to read the policy so you are informed and then contact Mrs. Principal for a meeting to discuss your concerns as well as how is the policy going to be implemented next year?  Working with the PTO at Cupcake may be a good way to discuss the fundraisers and other events and celebrations.

Some information: Candy

Not so appealing to the mother

Get coat pocket, swim bag, book bag ready. Bigfoot really not want be one mention chocolate not good hypoglycemia cure. That one more diabetes injustice. Bigfoot remain inexperienced, cavalier. Chocolate must have some benefit. Not as good as sugar packet/glucose tab, better than butter on rice cake or pepper jack cheese.

One TicTac: 0.5g

One M&M: 1g

One Skittle: 1.5g

One candy corn: 2g

In a perfect world, Cadbury Minieggs would SURPRISE! be found inside 1 of every 5 glucose tab jars

One Cadbury Miniegg: 2.5g

One Necco wafer: 3g*

One Starburst: 4.5g

One Hershey’s Kiss: 5g

One watermelon Jolly Rancher: 6g

One gummy worm: 7g

*irrelevant—no one eat Necco

OK Beverage

2g carbs for 8 ounces. (Vs. cow milk, 13g.)

Bigfoot realize share many complain. Today something nice: this product. Bubs try So Delicious Coconut Milk Beverage Sugar Free Vanilla on breakfast cereal. Like very much. Also OK drink plain. Also pass test addition hot cocoa. Bigfoot also enjoy.

Sweet because have stevia. One time, Bigfoot read stevia leaf not only better than sugar for diabetic person, also better than nothing. That why Bigfoot encourage Bubs drink tea—>vehicle for sneak stevia into diet. Also sprinkle Pure Via packet on berries. Very tasty, maybe have some blood sugar regulation benefit, at very least believe benign.*

Also this milk contain small amount calcium. 10% US RDA. Glass of cow milk: 30%. OK.

While look for picture, see So Delicious mini fudgesicles also now available stevia variety. 14g carbs. (OK.)

Bigfoot is not professional So Delicious spokesmodel.

*Here what Bigfoot read about that: some researchers believe that stevia helps diabetics absorb and use glucose in a more efficient manner.

Hawkeye

Drama

Swim yesterday. Before swim: 301. After 45 minute–>120.

Swim today. Before swim: 267. After 85 minute–>73.

Blood sugar control like driving on icy road, guard rail one side/other side cliff. Smash into guard rail too much: car not work right–lose features: windshield wiper, defrost, headlight, stereo, brake. Do everything avoid hit guard rail. But if go close cliff side: fall off/die. So not want drive close that edge.

How far take metaphor? Just want stay on road, not hit anything. Sometimes feel steering work OK. But road so icy! Maybe black ice. Also, driver feel kind of drunk. Maybe contact lens have tiny tear, vision not sharp, keep rubbing eye, wish see better. Squint. Sometimes skid, sometimes important bolt come loose, steering wheel pop right off. Just like chicken not chicken final episode M*A*S*H (actually a ____!), this case car not car ( ______! ).

Bigfoot sure every diabetes person think of this already, but maybe if just eat/swim; eat/swim; eat/swim…not need pancreas?

Tonight Bubs cough a little bit, not act sick, but Bigfoot keep feeling forehead. Maybe getting sick. Dream Nurse say Bubs mention throat hurt in school, also have high blood sugar all day. Have trouble fall asleep. Bigfoot not want get all Munchausen, but if Bubs sick tomorrow/not go school, maybe swim all day with short break for snack, see what happen? Unless too sick for swim.

In Sweden news, Bigfoot travel Stoughton, Massachusetts with famous librarian for Ikea fabric/tiny spoons/giant mixing bowl (not available.) This 40 minute drive, feel like other planet. Come home, bake odd-Swedish-shape vegan chocolate banana breads. 25 grams carbohydrate per 1/24th recipe.

Not Forget Bimbo

Turn-ons include: completing homework without delay and eating squishy sandwiches.

If not write down on back of hand, very difficult remember why Bigfoot enter Target. Upon enter store, brain screen wipe clean, Target display replace own thought with seasonal priority merchandise, e.g. yoga capri legging, minimal design 2012 family wall calendar, Val-u pack multicolor Pilot Precise V pen, 50% off holiday gift wrap–choice of dog w/sweater pattern or rosy-cheek Eskimo gal w/tiny igloo and polar bear pet.

But Bigfoot only require Morningstar Farms Chik’n puck and Bimbo. How diet devolve this manner? Bigfoot like blame diabetes. Bubs reliably eat Chik’n puck on English muffin, grilled cheese sandwich or PB+J on squishy Bimbo bread. Also, very easy tally carbs these foods. It handy shorthand for feed child.

Never read this thoroughly

Today, creeping dread: Morningstar Farms Chik’n puck even worse than inkling? Company website describe item: Crispy outside, tender inside, delicately seasoned patties. Packaging copywriter choose “pattie” for one patty. Pattie. Loose spelling indicate sloppy office dealings/misguided attempt cute/bullheaded insistence spellchecker wrong/copywriter own name Patty, feel uncomfortable use name describe faux chicken puck.

Ignore long, crazy ingredient list. One pattie: 16g carbs, 5g fat, 8g protein. In Bigfoot imaginary nutrition knowledge, that a fine balance for skinny diabetic person. Move on.

Bimbo bread not intended for discerning shopper. Packaging instruct consumer Say Beembo, as if reassure this bread not transmit venereal disease. Web site blare merry tune: say beeeeeeeeeem-bo! Bimbo mascot: white bear, very long eyelashes but male: he likes to ride bikes, play soccer with his friends, and eat sandwiches made with Bimbo® Bread. He also loves to ride around in hot air balloons. But, only after he finishes his homework first. Those hobby, work habit good enough Bigfoot. Wish edit out comma after “But” and end of sentence “first,” but this not Bigfoot job. Crappy bread OK, crappy copy OK too; not expression of value place on life. Plus, Bigfoot and Bigfoot spouse memorize 11g carbs per slutty slice.

Other food Bubs willing eat: apple with peanut butter. Any flavor Ben and Jerry, even smelly potato chip one. Rice cake with banana and peanut butter. M&Ms. Tortilla and refried beans. Chocolate drizzle kettle corn. Oatmeal with maple syrup. Pirate booty. Bacon. Bimbo toast cinnamon sugar. Bimbo bread grilled cheese sandwich. Bimbo Nutella sandwich. Chik’n puck.

It get better?

The cure in a raku pot.

Bigfoot seek Dan Savage It Gets Better campaign for diabetic children (gay or not gay.) It get better? So far, not get better.

Every week need more, more, more insulin. Every week send chart of blood sugar number Dr. Doughnut, highlight high #s orange, low #s blue. Page look very orange. Bubs pause building cardboard/tape sculpture, proclaim Dr. Doughnut is going to be disappointed in me.

BFOOT + BFOOT SPOUSE: (in chorus) No! No she won’t. This isn’t your fault. You can’t control it.

BFOOT SPOUSE: You can only control how you feel about it.

BFOOT: (silently) The hell? Control a feeling—what does that even mean?

Next up, dinnertime: build custom burritos. Bubs choose black beans, tortilla. No cheese. No avocado. No slaw. No hot sauce. No sour cream. Bigfoot eyeball this meal. Very high carb. Maybe if sneak in more fat, slow down sugar spike? Too late, Bigfoot pour mango smoothie into glass. Bigfoot make smoothie, think Bubs not have enough fruit this day. Then have second thought and smoothie look like big glass of high blood sugar make Bubs go blind. Even worse: Bubs want 2nd burrito, just beans and tortilla. Consent to some cheese but it probably too late apply brake. This meal require 6u Humalog cover carbs at 1:20 + 1u correction for BS > 200. Math: that 7u! A huge shot. Used to be 1/2 unit for meal. Maybe 1 unit. Now 7. Whip through vial.

Inhale the boutique patchouli

Bigfoot wish consult dietician, but remember Coro Center dietician team think corn a vegetable. Maybe rub lantern, genie version Dr. Weil come out. Embrace Bigfoot, smell of very advanced variety patchouli, hand Bubs shitaake mushroom and administer accupuncture, cure diabetes, vanish.

Best diet advice so far, eat cinnamon. Share news with Bubs. Bubs love cinnamon. Brainstorm meal: I should have cinnamon buns! And sticky buns! And that cinnamon bread we have for Christmas!

Twisted part Bigfoot enjoying fact insulin pump cost $8000. $8000! This week choose brand. Probably Bubs choose whichever look most like Star Wars ship.
