Moonrise, Moonset

For the purposes of this post, the image of Dream Babysitter will be portrayed by Wes Anderson. But they look nothing alike.

This week Dream Babysitter ketones. Not able come for Bubs tennis lesson yesterday. Think will feel better in evening for Bigfoot/Bigfoot spouse attend après falafel 8:30 screening Moonrise Kingdom. No. Still sick. Think will sleep, feel better in morning, come for tennis lesson. No. Still ketones. In text, voice mail refer this process “battling ketones.” What? How? Think will rest for day, come in evening, Bigfoot/BSpouse try again falafel/Moonrise combo. No. Dr. Doughnut send Dream Babysitter to hospital.

Not admitted to hospital, only tests. What tests? Dream Babysitter so kind. So apologetic miss tennis lesson/babysitting. Bigfoot not care those things, only sad nice boy feel crappy. How Dream Babysitter feel these ketones floating in body hours, days. No idea. Barf? Headache? Shiver?

Dream Babysitter very desirable summer home house guest Maine, Aruba, also tennis teacher/babysitter. Also have girlfriend! No time for sick. This happen often? Hospital? Dream Babysitter afraid? Maybe hospital de rigueur for diabetic teen jock. Want ask million questions.

And the image of Boston/France Diabetic Friend will be played by Hope Davis. They maybe do look a tiny bit alike in the hair.

Meanwhile, Bigfoot relieved not required go out have fun/film/falafel. Leave for Maine in morning. Early. Alone but w Hope Davis narrated audiobook. Meet 1990′s Boston/France friend lunch. Diabetic! Since age 7. Not 100% sure but think this friend use 2 shots/day (NPH?), no bolus, no basal. Or NPH is basal. Mystery. No one know. Could be French thing. Impossible find information this drug.

When Bubs diagnosed, Boston/France friend say something like, “This reminds me to ask my endocrinologist about Lantus.” ??? This friend very chic. Very hip. International wine expert. At wedding, actress from well-known crime drama sing w/accordion to tune of Roxy Music “More than This,” customized lyrics re bride’s disappointing old boyfriends. Endo at Joslin. Not sort of person typically unable access medicine. Why so old school treatment? I guess I’ve just always had such good control, they never wanted to change my treatment plan. Something like that. ??? When we were working together, I gained a lot of weight because my insulin dose was too high and I had to eat all of the time to keep up with it.This for real? Tomorrow try not ask million prying question. Question #1: Maybe NPH work better for Bubs? Not many good #s lately.

After Maine, begin obsess FFL. Only one day btw. Maine/Orlando. Not much time for obsess. Hope find cheat sheet diabetes packing list by Monday. Ten kachunkers too many, too few five days? Maybe ten just right. One unopened vial Humalog, maybe two. Syringes. 50? Backup vial Lantus. Lantus pen. Two cases test strips (200). Maybe 100 enough.

  1. Bubs not want NPH. It was the option for basal before 2003 when Lantus came into the picture. You needed to take it twice a day (usually morning and bedtime), but it had funky peaks that required uncovered snacks and lots of eating to the insulin, it had an unpredictable absorption rate (sometimes 10%, sometimes 80%), and several DOC peeps experienced lots of seizures from the lows. I never did, but I did have the crazy peaks. I was on it from age 10-20. They still use it in some cases (like gestational diabetes where there is no risk of lows) and many people claim to still use it bc, like your friend, they have it worked out and have no problems.

I thought having diabetes meant you were (really) low every day at lunch time because I was put on NPH at diagnosis. There is a blogger (Death of a Pancreas, I think) that used NPH before they started pumping and it worked for them. I am pretty sure that is the ONLY story I have heard of someone being happy with NPH.

Neil Patrick Harris – that is a different story.

No NPH….very old school, though it seems to work well for your friend. My first insulin was NPH & Regular when I was diagnosed in 1990. You can’t use NPH in a pump, either (it’s long-acting, you can only use short-acting insulin in a pump, like Novolog, Humalog, Apidra). Apidra is supposed to be highly effective for kids. It works very fast and reduces post-meal spikes, though when I took it I had a lot of hypos.

I hope Dream Babysitter is feeling better…maybe he is coming down with something or has an infection. That will sometimes cause ketones. Ketones make you feel like junk.

Also, pack twice as much diabetes supplies as you think you will need. I have had diabetes for 22 years and I still stress about packing enough / the right supplies!

My daughter started on NPH and was on it for almost two years. It worked for us because she was in a preschool that did not want to give her shots. If you give NPH at breakfast, it has a peak that comes at lunch so you don’t need to give a shot then. Once she started public school (with a nurse present at lunch) we were able to switch to lantus. But she was on NPH for so long that we had it pretty well figured out and it worked well for us.

It’s also worth noting that Wilf, who I consider a superstar of the “Children with Diabetes” community, still uses NPH for his daughter.
